Good article, but think they’re missing the boat re: the demise of Foursquare and Gowalla. While other location aware sites/services will become more pervasive, the Gowallas and Foursquares have existing (albeit new) eco-systems and mini cultures, which provide value to their users. More than likely, these services, along with Twitter will be purchased and folded into others, like Facebook or one of Google’s myriad offerings.
